Tyneside, 1912. John Rutherford’s glass making empire is in trouble. A brutal industrialist who has sacrificed his children
for the family firm, he is about to count the true cost of his tyranny. With his son set on renouncing the family business
and his daughter embroiled in a scandalous love affair, the future looks bleak indeed.
Githa Sowerby, decended from Gateshead’s world-famous Sowerby glass making dynasty, has disappeared from Tyneside
history. With a new production the company plans to put her back on the map. An associated events programme includes launching Githa’s first biography, commissions by local, women writers and an exhibition of Sowerby Glass at Northern Stage and Gateshead Heritage@St Mary’s.
Rutherford & Son by Githa Sowerby is a Northern Stage and Threshold
Theatre co-production, directed by Richard Beecham.
