Building Bridges

Exhibition date:
05 Sep - 11 Oct 2009
Venue:
Shipley Art Gallery

The natural drama of the Tyne gorge has always placed its bridges at the heart of Tyneside’s urban iconography, from the Romans’ Pons Aelius to the Gateshead Millennium Bridge and beyond.

Bringing together paintings, photography and film, this exhibition celebrates the responses these bridges have evoked and the lives that have been lived around them. One of the centrepieces will be JWM Turner’s watercolour of Newcastle and Gateshead along his sketches of Tyneside, on loan from Tate, London especially for this exhibition.
