Newcastle Reinvented: Views Over the Ages

Exhibition date:
19 Sep 2009 - 26 Sep 2010
Venue:
Laing Art Gallery

A celebration of the watercolours and drawings that explore the heritage and renewal of Newcastle over more than 200 years. On display will be fascinating views of the old centre of Newcastle around the quayside, castle and cathedral. Alongside these are scenes by architects/artists John Dobson and Benjamin Green picturing the imposing new city centre they were creating in Grey Street and Grainger Street.

Pictures on show include William Bell Scott’s imagined scene Building the New Castle, and John Storey’s two huge panoramic views contrasting Elizabethan Newcastle and the Victorian city. Thomas Pattison’s The Tyne celebrates a city built on the labour of miners, shipyard workers and sailors, while Byron Dawson’s St James’ Football Ground, dating from the 1940s, is a celebration of the common man.
